ARIK HAD no idea how much time had passed. He knew Reg was nearby, sitting in the chair, reading some book he’d found. The late afternoon had grown cold. Arik hadn’t noticed, but Reg must have gotten a blanket and curled it around him. Arik’s fingers ached, but the vision of what was on the canvas and where he was going was as clear and bright as the sunniest summer day, and the canvas looked like his image. Well, the bones of the image were there. He still had a lot of work, but it was there.
“I’m losing the light,” Arik said with a strong sigh. He set down his brush and flexed his hand and fingers to work out the kinks that had crept in.
“Then you should stop.” Reg was smiling, wide and strong. “Are you going to show Ken?”
“No. I need to make sure this is going to work before I do anything.” Arik set the work to the side where it could dry. “I think some food is in order.”
“I can get some and bring it back if you like. I need to go get the airbrushes for you.”
“Give me a minute. I want to ride with you.” Arik knew that was going to complicate logistics, but Reg jumped up and folded the blanket and set it aside as Arik quickly cleaned up and got a jacket. Once he was done and had locked the house, they went to the bike and rode to Reg’s house as it started to mist. Not that Arik cared; he was happy and soaked up the energy from the speeding bike and the heat by pressing as close to Reg as he could.
“Have you ever thought of getting your own bike?” Reg asked when they pulled to a stop.
“Why? I like riding behind you.” To accentuate his point, he made sure Reg knew just how excited he was. “That’s half the fun.”
“I see.” Reg put the bike in gear, and they took off, making the turn to reach Reg’s house. Reg put the bike in the garage, and they moved over to the truck. It wasn’t nearly as much fun, but when the sky opened up on their way to the gas station, they were both happy to be out of the weather. “We’ll get the airbrush supplies, and then we can have dinner.” Arik agreed, and a minute later Reg pulled up to the station.
“What the—” he began. The entire area was full of bikes, most covered to protect them from the rain. The main bay doors were up, with bikes filling the inside. Reg parked on the street and got out. Arik stayed where he was when he saw the men gathered around in groups talking, many of them dressed in leathers. The only one he recognized other than Reg was Slasher, and he didn’t look the same. Intimidating was the only word that came to mind.
Arik pulled out his phone and brought up the radar app, which showed solid green in their area, meaning the rain wouldn’t be stopping anytime soon.
